Walking Safaris

11th March 2021 by

Walking safaris offer a unique way of exploring Botswana, and are still the best way to get up close and personal with nature.

There are only a few operators and lodges that offer walking safaris. We will book only high quality operators with excellent guides. Mostly, accommodation will be a non-participation, semi-luxury mobile-tented safaris. Guests will visit Botswana’s most remote areas, from the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Parks, to the far and remote Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Walking safaris are very much about getting closer to nature and appreciating the smaller things not often seen from a vehicle. Your guide will take you on a journey of discovery, examining everything from animal tracks to insects, flowers and medicinal plants. Whilst encounters with big game are not the aim of every walk, your experienced guide will conduct approaches to the larger game species where he/she deems it to be safe to do so.

In addition to the magical journeys we create for all our clients, we have a unique safari that specializes in accessible travel for the elderly or for persons with disabilities: including mobility, visual and hearing impairment.

There are scheduled tours available or tours can be tailor-made and exclusive. Vehicles and camping equipment are modified for your comfort and the lodges are well equipped and wheelchair accessible.

Privately guided safaris are completely exclusive to you, your travel partners and family. There are two types of privately-guided safaris: The first is land-based where your guide will collect you from your airport or airstrip of arrival and take you on a multi-day mobile safari. Secondly, there is the fly-in safari where your guide joins you on a fly-in safari and creates a privately guided experience for you in Botswana’s luxury lodges.

Mobile Safaris explore Botswana much the same way the early explorers did over a hundred years ago. There are a large number of mobile safari operators in Botswana offering everything from budget participation safaris through to 5-star, fully-serviced mobile safaris. You can choose from scheduled departure safaris with fixed itineraries or a tailor-made safari with flexible dates and itinerary to suit your particular needs.

On a mobile safari, your guide will unveil the hidden secrets of the bush whilst on game drives and walks, and you’ll arrive back to a secluded campsite in the evenings to reminisce around the campfire. This is a wonderful way of meeting new people and enjoying your African safari experience together.

Areas visited differ on each safari but include most of the attractions of Botswana, Moremi, Nxai Pan, Makgadikgadi, Savuti, Khwai, Tsodilo Hills, Central Kalahari and Chobe areas. Some tours may include Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls).

Fly-in safaris are a popular option for exploring the wilds of Botswana. Lodge-to-lodge safaris can be enhanced with air transfers between lodges by helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. Most lodges are situated close to the airstrips so you will be met there by a guide in a safari vehicle who will transfer you to the lodge.

Most people like to do a combination of water or land-based lodges. At each lodge you will enjoy shared game / boating activities with other guests. If you prefer to have your own private guided activities, this can be arranged at an additional cost.

Scenic flights by helicopter over the Delta can also be arranged at the lodges, but it is best to pre-book these activities to avoid disappointment.

We offer Photographic Safaris with a specialist guide where you will spend your time seeking out beautiful and unique photo opportunities. The vehicles are modified to accommodate photographic equipment and tripods. On the Chobe River, the boats are modified with side-seats and tripod mounts to ensure the best shots. Various well-known photographers offer their services guiding these safaris and they bring a wealth of photographic knowledge and experience.

Some photographic safaris can be arranged to include the use of photographic equipment. These can either be based at various lodges or as part of a privately guided mobile camping safari.
